BOD Meeting Minutes-February 13, 2024

BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING

February 13, 2024

Arts Based School North


The Arts Based School Board of Directors met at ABS North on 7th Street. The meeting was called to order at 5:52 pm.

ABS Staff in attendance: Charter Director Robin Hollis, Principal ABS North Yvonne Leab, Curriculum Director Liz Green, Principal ABS South Sherell McArthur, Director of Operations and Student Services Ashley Tate, and Parent Council Co-chair Katie Whiteheart.

Board Members in attendance: Endia Beal, Asher Ellis, Ellen Coble, Chanita Coulter, David Ford, Tomisha Gladman, Amir Henry, Brenda Kennedy, Jay Kumar, Michelle Hopkins Lawrence, Shannon Meares, Tonya Monteiro, Elizabeth Repetti, and Letitia Wall.

Meeting materials: The agenda, Director’s Report, November and December financials, December Meeting Minutes, and Board Matrix were distributed to the Board by email on February 8.


Shannon Meares chaired the meeting.


Annual Enrollment Lottery via Lotterease began at 5:47.


Elizabeth Repetti motioned to approve December minutes. The motion was seconded by Amir Henry. Motion carried.


Review of November and December Financial Results

  • Shannon shared a summary from the finance committee.
  • Finance committee recommended approval of November and December financials. Motion carried.

Review of amended budget for 2023-2024 as presented by the Finance Committee

  • Finance committee recommended approval of changes. Budget passed unanimously.

Report from Facilities Committee on Electric Bus Initiative/Solar Panel grant (Jay Kumar)

  • Application has been submitted with EPA for rebate for electric school bus. EPA will announce the decision by April.
  • The Facilities Committee is working on an application with NC Green Power for a solar array to generate electricity. The program is Solar Plus Schools. 

Report from Nominating Committee on nominations for the board and officers for next year

  • Shannon Meares, Robyn Hollis, Tonya Monteiro, Michelle Hopkins Lawrence, Tomisha Gladman, and Elizabeth Repetti were on the nominating committee.
  • Shannon gave a brief overview of each nominee for the board. All are ABS parents.
  • The nominating committee recommended approval of Jennifer Borrero, Sarah Avery, Kellie Alston, Jonathan Williams, and Becky Dickson. 
  • All the nominees were approved. 
  • Slate of officers for 2024-2025 were proposed: Elizabeth Repetti as chair, Endia Beal as vice chair, Michelle Hopkins Lawrence as recording secretary, and Asher Ellis as treasurer.
  • The committee recommended approving the slate which was approved.

Director’s Report for January and February (Robin Hollis)

  • Lottery report: 408 applications 
  • Midyear MAP results show recovery for learning loss from covid. ABS students outperformed the national mean.
  • Approval of the calendar will be voted on at the March meeting due to changes in the WSFCS calendar.
  • Teacher bonuses: Congratulations to our teachers, Ms. Ruffin (3rd), Ms. Meeks (4th), Ms. Robertson (4th), Ms. Pike (4th), Mr. Tate (5th), and Ms. Frazier (5th) for being recognized to receive a bonus from the state honoring the extraordinary growth they accomplished with their students in math and reading last year.
  • We are in compliance with Clean Classrooms for Carolina Kids regarding asbestos. ABS will next test for lead. Results will be made public on the state website.
  • Partnership with Real Time Crime Center
  • Charter renewal for 2025 process has begun. The self assessment is complete. The virtual site visit will be April 22. Board members will receive a calendar invite from Robin.

Parent Council Updates from Ashley Katie Whiteheart

  • Some new teacher appreciation items have been added.
  • Pizza Friday volunteer system has been reorganized around monthly volunteers by grade.
  • January Jam was a success.
  • Next Parent Council meeting is Friday, February 16. There will be an evening meeting in March.

Looking Ahead:  NEXT Board Meeting will be Tuesday, March 12, 2024 at 5:45 pm.


Tomisha Gladman motioned to adjourn. Tonya Monteiro seconded. Meeting adjourned at 6:30 pm.
