BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING

November 14, 2023

Arts Based School North


The Arts Based School Board of Directors met at ABS North on 7th Street. The meeting was called to order at 5:51 pm.

Attendance: 

ABS Staff: Charter Director Robin Hollis, Curriculum Director Liz Green, Director of Operations and Student Services Ashley Tate, and Parent Council Co-chair Stephanie Smith.

Board Members: Ellis Asher, Endia Beal, Joy Blaser, Ellen Coble, Chanita Couter, David Ford, Tomisha Gladman, Brenda Kennedy, Jay Kumar, Michelle Hopkins Lawrence, Shannon Meares, Tonia Monteiro, Kimberly Pemberton, Elizabeth Repetti, Letitia Wall

Meeting materials: The agenda, Strategic Plan, and October Meeting Minutes were distributed to the Board by email on November 8. Additional materials (Charter School Director’s Report and 2023 Financial Audit Report) were shared by email on November 14.


Director’s Report (Robin Hollis)

  • This year’s annual fund hit a new high of $78,000. About 40% of families and 100% of the board participated. 
  • Draft of the school calendar for 2024-2025 will be discussed at the next board meeting.
  • See additional details in report.

Approval of October Minutes

  • Asher Ellis motioned to approve; seconded by Tomisha Gladman
  • Motion passed without opposition.

October Financial Results and Audit report (voting will be postponed to December)

  • Approval of the October financials was postponed because they were not ready in time for the board to review.
  • Board members may submit questions about the audit report ahead of the December meeting. The audit reported “no findings” which means there are no problems to report.

Parent Council Report 

  • Next Parent Council meeting will be held on November 27 at 5:30 pm for a presentation on reading instruction and state requirements.

Committee Updates and Strategic Plan review

  • Facilities reported that the Spectrum audit will save money. Mulch is being added to the 8th street building playground.
  • The board broke into committees for about 20 minutes of planning.

Important upcoming dates

  • The next Board Meeting will be Tuesday, November 14 at 5:45 pm at the 7th Street Building (ABS North).
  • ABS Holiday Party will be Saturday, December 9, 6pm

Ellen Coble  moved to adjourn and Kimberly Pemberton seconded. Motion passed without opposition. Meeting adjourned at  6:50 pm.
