BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING

December 12, 2023

Arts Based School North


The Arts Based School Board of Directors met at ABS North on 7th Street. The meeting was called to order at 5:47 pm.

Attendance: 

ABS Staff: Charter Director Robin Hollis, Principal ABS North Yvonne Leab, Curriculum Director Liz Green, Principal ABS South Sherell McArthur, Director of Operations and Student Services Ashley Tate, and Parent Council Co-chairs Stephanie Smith and Katie Whiteheart.

Board Members: Asher Ellis, Endia Beal, Joy Blaser, Ellen Coble, Michelle Hopkins Lawrence, Elizabeth Repetti, and Letitia Wall

Meeting materials: The agenda, Director’s Report, November Meeting Minutes, and Vision for South Campus were distributed to the Board by email on December 7 materials. The revised November financials were shared by email on December 12.


Elizabeth Repetti chaired the meeting.


Approval of November Minutes 

  • Approval postponed to January because we did not have a quorum.

Review of November Financial Results & Amended budget (Asher Ellis) 

  • We are on track and on budget.
  • The amended budget includes a long-delayed raise for the Charter Director.
  • Approval postponed to January because we did not have a quorum.

 Facilities Committee-Electric Bus Initiative (Robin Hollis)

  • The plan is to use NC Access grant of $50,000 for an electric bus or newer diesel bus. The choice of bus depends on receiving a rebate for an electric bus.

South Campus Vision at Diggs/HHNA 

  • The draft report was prepared for the school board.

Director’s Report (Robin Hollis)

  • School report card preview shows school performance grade of B. 
  • Draft of the school calendar has been shared with stakeholders.
  • Need to replace some heating units in 7th Street building

Parent Council Updates 

  • The last meeting focused on a presentation on ABS reading curriculum. It was in the evening and well attended.
  • Hot beverage bar was offered on both campuses this morning.
  • Currently working on January Jam (1/19)

Important upcoming dates

  • NEXT Board Meeting – Tuesday, January 9, 2024 5:45 pm at the 7th Street Building (ABS North).

Meeting adjourned at  6:14 pm.
