BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING

January 14, 2025

Arts Based School North


The Arts Based School Board of Directors met virtually due to inclement weather. 

ABS Staff in attendance: Charter Director Robin Hollis, Principal of ABS North Yvonne Leab, Principal of ABS South Sherell McArthur, and Parent Council co-president Stephanie Smith

Board Members in attendance: Sarah Avery, Jennifer Borrero, Becky Dickson, Asher Ellis, Brenda Kennedy, Jay Kumar, Michelle Hopkins Lawrence, Shannon Meares, Kimberly Pemberton, Elizabeth Repetti, Brittany Todd, and Jonathan Williams.

Meeting materials: The agenda, November and December financial statements, the November minutes, and the Charter Director’s reports for December and January were shared via email on January 9.

Elizabeth Repetti called the meeting to order at 5:48 pm.


  1. Repetti motioned to approve November minutes. A. Ellis seconded the motion which was carried unanimously.

Review of November Financials by (A. Ellis)

  • Expenses are on track to be within budget.
  • Per pupil allotment from the state is higher than budgeted.
  • Jay Kumar is regularly checking with EPA for status updates on the reimbursement for the purchase of electric bus.
  • We have permission to scrap the diesel bus which should net $2-3 thousand.
  • Ellis recommended approval of financials for November which passed by unanimous vote. 

Committee Updates – Board Applications (S. Meares)

  • The board has openings for next year. Please help to find new board members.
  • Some applications have been received.
  • Review of application process: The timeline, process, and applications are posted on ABS website.

Committee Updates – Facilities

  • January 24 Director has a meeting scheduled for discussion of rental agreement for south campus

Director’s Report

  • The lottery is scheduled for February 11.
  • Map Testing and MClass testing is underway.
  • We’ve had 7 snow days so far. Three days are excused. ABS will hold four make up days in May 2025.
  • Director recommended adoption of calendar draft C beginning school on August 11 and ending on May 22.
  • Williams motioned to accept draft C. Meares seconded the motion which was approved unanimously.
  • Discussion of Power School data breach which has affected schools nationwide.
  • ABS is scheduled to switch to Infinite Campus on July 1 as had been previously decided by North Carolina’s Education Department.
  • Charter renewal was approved on January 13 for 10 years.
  • National School Lunch Program: Federal program will reimburse the school at a rate of $4.50 per lunch as contracted with Goodness Gracious, a local catering company.
  • S. Meares motioned to approve the contract from Goodness Gracious. K. Pemberton seconded the motion which was approved unanimously.

Parent Council Update (S. Smith)

  • Next meeting will be held virtually on Friday 1/17.
  • Parents have asked about remote learning which will be discussed at the next Parent Council meeting.

Next Board meeting will be held on Tuesday 2/11 at 5:45 on the North Campus. 


Motion to adjourn by M.H. Lawrence, seconded by Williams. Meeting adjourned at 6:29.
